The funny thing is it is quite a bit cheaper the actual Louis Vuitton bags it is based on. However, it is still more than I am comfortable with spending on a bag.

Bah. Luggage is quite possibly one of the stupidest things to make into a status symbol, imho.
I don't care how rich I get, I'll never buy "luxury" luggage. All I want is something that gives me the amount of space I need, wheels through an airport easily, and looks different enough from the endless sea of black ballistic nylon rolling bags that I'm able to spot it at the baggage claim.

I would never buy a whole set obviously and the quality is still unknown to me, but i think I would, quality leather is something that lasts. Hell, my mother and father still use my grandpas leather bag set.

I don't see as a status symbol but good craftsmanship and quality leather. They look nice.

If you're not dead set on leather, I hear a lot of good things about Globe Trotter. They are more expensive though, but they have been around quite a long time from what I understand. I have a Coach weekender that is leather and it is fantastic. I think I paid around $400 for it a year or two ago. I also have a Coach briefcase that has stood up to a couple years of daily use and it still looks really good.
Filson and J W Hulme are the other two bag makers that I know of that are reasonably affordable with a high quality, but they are based in the States. I'm sure Filson has international retailers if you're international. I think Filson focuses on canvas bags though, but they have a repair service and a lifetime guarantee. Similar to Barbour I believe, at least to the extent that people tend to repair rather than purchase a new one.

Sure. I'm just saying it's one of the things to which I assign a particularly low value.
